gen z fears

Schools. Movie theaters. Concerts. Now grocery stores. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but we need gun control action now. Understanding what gun control is is the first step. It isn’t someone taking your gun away from you. It is creating necessary channels for obtaining such weapons. The fact that our nation can’t grieve one mass shooting before another one occurs is scary. I think that maybe older generations have a harder time saying we need more gun control because they’re more disconnected from those situations than gen z. I can’t go to school without fearing that I’ll be murdered. Every classroom has an active shooter escape map. I can’t go to a movie theater without being overly anxious at every sound effect. I can’t go to a concert or live event without forming an escape plan in my mind. Now I can’t go to the grocery store without keeping an eye out for myself. I don’t even get surprised by mass shootings in the US anymore and that scares me. When will we realize that thoughts and prayers alone are not enough? They must be met with action to end these senseless slayings of innocent people.

One of my classes a today talked about national events that categorized generations. We talked about how Gen Z is defined by mass shootings. Schools, theaters, concerts. We live in fear and you cannot tell me that is overreacting. We see it so often that it is a real fear. I pray my generation is the last to live in this fear. Things have to change.
